Before I begin I would like to give you a rule in
following God's Word. It's entitled "The
Golden Rule Of Interpretation" --"When
the plain sense of scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense,
therefore take every word at its primary, ordinary usual literal meaning
unless the facts of the immediate context, studied in the light of
related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths indicate clearly
otherwise."
This large paper was
written due to the confusion that people have concerning Eternal
salvation.
Many people believe that you can lose your salvation,
while others believe you will never lose your salvation.
The information you are about to read supports the claim
to eternal salvation and the fact that once you're saved you are always
saved.. I have noticed that certain verses people use to support their
false claims of losing their salvation if they'd only read the verse
before it they'd realize that it is not talking about salvation. So I
will begin thinking back to the day I was reached and saved on January
18th 1991 and the assurance God gave me one night when I was down and
doubting if I could truly have entered into such a great privilege "I
give unto them (thee) eternal life and they (thou) shall never
perish..."
John 15:1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10-17
1 ¶ I am the true
vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
True Vine --> another translation could be "the genuine vine".
The Lord is the true vine. The source of life. His Father is the
husbandman (vinedresser)
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he
taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it
may bring forth more fruit.
I believe both examples are a saved person for it says "in Him". The
Greek word for "taketh away" is AIRO. The King James Version uses "taketh
away" for the translation that could mean God disciplines His own in
physical death (For this cause many are weak and
sickly among you, and many sleep. 1 Corinthians 11:30)
But it could also mean "lift up" as in John: (Then
took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out
of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. John
8:59) We can see here how the Lord held back punishment that
should have taken place. This shows that the Lord could also encourage a
weak saint so that they may grow for him. The same we show more care to
a plant in our garden to help it grow back strong and healthy.
The branch that bears fruit is pruned as in Romans 8 and other places
God takes away the unnecessary in our life to make us stronger in Him
For He is the potter and we are the clay.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have
spoken unto you.
The word here can be translated and changed to: "because of...". The
words the Lord has preached to them has brought them to salvation.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot
bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye,
except ye abide in me.
"Abide in Me" stay close to the Lord (fellowship) and you'll be sure to
bear fruit.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that
abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for
without me ye can do nothing.
This is the key verse. He is the vine we're the branch. (1
Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the
Spirit of God dwelleth in you?) and the saved show some signs of
the salvation they have entered into.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a
branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the
fire, and they are burned.
This chapter in context is talking about Christians so I believe it's
safe to say verse six is talking about a backslidden Christian. We see
the word "Abide" again. Which is in this verse someone not close to God.
their testimony is ruined and we'll notice it IS NOT GOD who cast out
the person but if you notice it was MEN. Men scoff at backslidden
Christians. They drag his testimony into the mud, throw his testimony in
the fire. One of the key words here is "MEN" not God.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye
shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Someone close to God, God hears them more quickly. (James
5:16, ...The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.)
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much
fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
The Father is glorified when we are like the Saviour "so shall..." is
proof if you show a likeness of God you're saved. (Then
said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my
word, then are ye my disciples indeed; John 8:31). But we must
not forget that we can backslide (v.2)
We can notice if we abide in God, our closeness increases.
Fruit (v.2)
More Fruit (v.2)
Much Fruit (v.8)
Verses 10-17
If we abide in Him we will have:
--> full joy (v.11)
--> love for one another (v. 12,13,17)
-->fruit remains (v.16) {we want to grow
more for Him everyday} [the more we abide in Him the more Godlier we
become]
--> answered prayer (v.16)
Romans 11:22
22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of
God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou
continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
The gentiles have been given a great privilege. God has also provided
them salvation. We know that the Head is Christ and the body is the
believers and it cannot be severed. This is not speaking of individuals
but the Gentiles and Israelites. And God could take away His offer of
Salvation if they ignore it.
God took the privilege from the nation of Israel and He could us too. If
the Gentiles reject him, he can reject them also. But this is not the
Believers. Paul is speaking about the Gentiles and Israelites. He is not
talking about the believers professing to be saved.
Galatians 5: 16,17; 20,21
{note: Galatians 4:6-->And because ye are sons,
God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying,
Abba, Father. --> When someone is saved they become children of
God. We can call Him father, and we know once a Father always a Father.}
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye
shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and
the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the
other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
We can see in the Bible how the Spirit helps us. But we can see from
these two verses if we do not stick close to God. We can sin. But those
two verses do not tell us we'll lose our salvation if we sin.
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance,
emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envying, murders, drunkenness, reveling, and such like: of the which
I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which
do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
The word "Do" in verse 21 can be translated "To Practice". Anyone who
professes to be saved but is continually living like this is obvious --
they were never saved.
There were people who professed to be Christians Paul is warning the
people ones who practice these things never were Christians.
Colossians 1:,21,22,23
21 And you, that were sometime alienated and
enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
We once were alienated to God, we knew Him not. but now He has brought
us to Him through salvation.
22 In the body of his flesh through death, to
present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
We are now saved and when we go to heaven we'll be sinless (Isaiah
1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your
sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red
like crimson, they shall be as wool.); (1
Corinthians 15: 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last
trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed.53 For this corruptible must put
on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.)
23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and
settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye
have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under
heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
"If ye continue in the faith..." can be translated "Since you will". A
true Christian will seek the Lord in all things even when he sins, he
will look for forgiveness. Notice the difference when Peter and Judas
sinned. Peter was terrible and wept bitterly he betrayed his Saviour and
wanted forgiveness Judas killed himself . He was not grounded in Christ.
He of course then couldn't stand. Judas was never saved. He was a
professor not a possessor. (For a just man falleth
seven times, and riseth up again:... Proverbs 24:16)
1 Timothy 4:1
1 ¶ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the
latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing
spirits, and doctrines of devils;
This verse is warning us against apostasy to come. this whole chapter is
talking about false teaching and what we should do to preserve
ourselves. verse 16: (Take heed unto thyself, and
unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both
save thyself, and them that hear thee.) Read the chapter this
verse is not speaking of salvation. but telling us that if we stay in
the doctrine. It will save us from accepting false teaching.
2 timothy 2: 11,12
11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with
him, we shall also live with him:
12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if
we deny him, he also will deny us:
This book has been written to warn and encourage. Verse 11 and beginning
of 12 speak of examples of Christians. Paul is speaking in plural to
reach to others. If we be dead with him is saying when we were saved it
was as if the old died away and things became new. (2
Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new
creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.)
"If we suffer" whoever endures the most and is faithful will reign more
then others with him.
If people deny Him (But whosoever shall deny me
before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 10:33, but he that denieth me before men shall be denied before
the angels of God. Luke 12:9 ). He will deny them in the end. But
a true child of God cannot deny Him so a person that would do this was
never saved if they reject Him
Hebrews 6: 4-6,7,8,9-10,11-15
4 For it is impossible for those who were once
enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made
partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to
come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing
they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open
shame.
We should first of all realize that verse 4,5 is not directed at the
readers because he says "those" second of all the first step to
salvation is repentance but is not salvation. We can see that all the
things listed here can be experienced by an unsaved person.
enlightened --> heard the gospel
tasted heavenly gift --> realized what God was
providing (they tasted but didn't take)
Were made partakers of the Holy Ghost --> They
were privileged ( 1 Cor. 7:14, For the
unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife
is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now
are they holy.)
--> Could have been once convicted (John 16:8, And
when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness,
and of judgment:)
But in all this there is not one mention of, trust, repentance,
remission of sin -- no salvation.
If someone professed after all of this (It was only profession for there
is no record here of salvation) and falls away and publicly puts down
the name of Christ to trample His name, it is apostasy.
7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that
cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is
dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
oft upon -> often
meet -> useful
dressed-> cultivated
In verse seven nature is compared to the true believer. The earth
drinketh the rain and bringeth herbs. A Christian loves God's Word and
it shows.
8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is
rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
This verse speaks of apostates who were able to accept the truth but
truthfully never did. They cannot bring glory to God and will be cursed.
We should take note --they never were saved.
9 ¶ But, beloved, we are persuaded better things
of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work
and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye
have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
These two verses are spoken to believers for he calls them beloved and
refers to them as having salvation.
11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the
same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them
who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because
he could swear by no greater, he swear by himself,
14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and
multiplying I will multiply thee.
15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he
obtained the promise
These verses are very nice. For the writer is telling the ones weak in
faith to continue like ones before them. We can see here also God has
promised salvation to true believers even if they fall and stumble as he
promised Abraham He would bless his descendants. Abraham believed God's
word so he "fought the good fight," because he believed what God told
him. Same as theses Christians who are weak and may stumble that they
have been promised eternal life which they have (v.9)
Hebrews 10:26-31
26 For if we sin willfully after that we have
received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice
for sins,
27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation,
which shall devour the adversaries.
28 He that despised Moses law died without mercy under two or three
witnesses:
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy,
who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood
of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath
done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will
recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The
Lord shall judge his people.
31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
There are two things we should get straight right from the start
--> This is an example "IF WE"
-->It is not speaking of the writer or the ones he's writing to (v.39
But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that
believe to the saving of the soul.)
The writer is telling us this is what will happen to an apostate. We
know this as an apostate because a backslider will not trample God's
name. An apostate as mentioned earlier was never saved, and never will
be.
Someone may be enlightened to the truth but does the truth dwell within
them? Two different things.
James 1: 12
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation:
for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord
hath promised to them that love him.
we can see here how the crown of life is not another phrase for eternal
life but is an actual crown. For we can see that the original
translation for this word is (stephanos -> primarily "that which
surrounds, as a wall or crown " -> form stepho, "to encircle" )vines*
The same translation is used in 1 Peter 5:4 (crown
of glory), Phil. 4:1, 1 Thessalonians 2:19, Rev. 2:10, Rev. 3:11,
Rev 4:4,10 ("they throw the crowns at His feet");
6:2; 9:7; 12:1;14:14
The word is also used for "the crown of thorns"
that was placed upon the Lord. (Matt. 27:29, Mark 15:17; John 19:2,5)
So from what I see written in this verse is an reward that a Christian
may receive. Some people do take the crown as being a metaphor, but even
to take it this way, there is still no mention of it as being eternal
salvation you are receiving, but an award, blessing given to you by God.
People may say this is a false teaching to say this is an award. But
surrounding scripture and Greek terms seem to prove otherwise.
2 Peter 3: 1-9, 10-12, 13-14,17
1 ¶ This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto
you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the
holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and
Saviour:
3 ¶ Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers,
walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers
fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the
creation.
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the
heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the
water:
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water,
perished:
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are
kept in store, reserved unto fire against the Day of Judgment and
perdition of ungodly men.
8 ¶ But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one
thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand
years as one day.
9 ¶ The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count
slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should
perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Peter is telling how there will be scoffers questioning if the Lord is
to come. Then where is He? Peter let's us know He is not slack
concerning His promise.
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in
the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise,
and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the
works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 ¶ Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner
of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein
the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall
melt with fervent heat?
He is telling us what God is going to do to the old earth.
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look
for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent
that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
Have you ever heard of encouragement? This was what Peter is speaking
about here. He tells us what we will enter into and it should make us
want to live for the Lord. Someone truly saved and sins will be held
accountable at the Judgment Seat Of Christ. (1 Cor.
4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who
both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make
manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have
praise of God..... (2Cor.5:10 For we must
all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may
receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done,
whether it be good or bad.)
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these
things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the
wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.
It is a shame for someone to use this verse to say that there is no way
of being saved and always saved. Look a the two ahead of it (15
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is
salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom
given unto him hath written unto you;
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in
which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are
unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto
their own destruction.)
unlearned--> untaught
wrest --> twist
These verses are warning Christians to beware of false teachings so they
will not be led astray. But that doesn't say they're unsaved if they are
taught wrong. Peter is telling them to be careful to not let it happen.
1John 2:24
24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have
heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning
shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the
Father.
If you take the time to read the chapter you will see that John is
telling about antichrists. people that professed but is now trampling
God's name. they were never saved because John says in 1 John 5:13 once
saved always saved. This verse and the next one is put as a test and
does not mean that the ones that stick and abide with Christ are true
believers but shows the ones that are living for Him and not falter.
Revelations 3:4,5
4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have
not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for
they are worthy.
5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I
will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess
his name before my Father, and before his angels.
The city of Sardis was destroyed by an earthquake in 17 ad. It was
rebuilt by Tiberius Caesar who was in rule at the time. This prompted
emperor worship in the church at Sardis. But not all worshipped for the
ones who never worshipped were really saved (v.4). For you only worship
God. Verse five is speaking of true believers who endured the ridicule
for not worshipping Tiverius Caesar. The statement in the KJV that fives
and argument is "I will not blot out his name" which seems to imply that
God could.
A very important point should be made that in the Greek it is a double
negative which would more accurately read: "I will by no means blot out
his name." the reason He will confess him to the Father is because he's
truly saved. God has promised to add our names to the book of life on
the day of salvation and to say He can remove it is to call Him a liar.
These verses should be enough to show that there is Eternal Security but
there are more that clearly states the obvious truth
John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
When someone truly believes in Him they have EVERLASTING LIFE. The verse
does not say if you live right but says as soon as they put their trust
in Him they have everlasting life. I believe we all know what
everlasting means.
John 10:27,28
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and
they follow me:
If you know anything about sheep they will only obey their Shepherd. A
shepherd knows his sheep, and when he calls a sheep recognizes his
voice. It is the same as a true believer. The Lord knows who they are
and they have a desire to please God even if they stumble they will seek
to restore fellowship with Christ. But we know they don't lose their
salvation because of the next verse...
28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they
shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
The Lord gives them eternal life as soon as they honestly believe. He
then says that they have eternal life and will NEVER perish. "Neither
shall...man pluck..." There is nothing that can be done to separate a
true believer from God.
Ephesians 1:6,13
6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein
he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
We can see here how Paul is talking about salvation. In this verse Paul
can tell us how we are accepted in the beloved.
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that
ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,
We can see how he tells us how we were saved. We heard, then believed
and true Christians are SEALED with the Holy Spirit of promise. This can
also read "By whom also, when you believed you were sealed with the
promised Holy Spirit." We should remember, "in biblical times a seal
denoted both identification of ownership and protection provided by the
owner" (Nelson Study Bible)
1 John 5:13
13 These things have I written unto you that
believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have
eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
What more can we say it plainly says "KNOW" what else does it mean? The
verse is telling us we know we have eternal life. How do we know? When
we truthfully believed.
For someone to say we can be saved then lost is living a miserable life.
Always scared they may do something wrong. Always working to keep their
faith, they seem to forget faith is by grace (Eph. 2:8), while true
Christians who know that Eternal Security is scriptural want to do
something for their Saviour.
A true believer may sin but seeks God's forgiveness. Two good
examples of this is King David. When his sin was brought before him he
was feeling awful but was forgiven. The same with Peter. We find nowhere
where they lost their salvation. But their trials brought them closer to
God. |
