Eternal Security Continued
This second part of the eternal security topic was written when an email
was received from someone who strongly felt that my views were
incorrect. Below you will find scripture that the person gave me and the
scriptural interpretations for them.
A good place to start would be the working of the Holy Spirit in the
Old Testament. We can see how God could leave and come to His people
when He wanted. We can see how David in Psalm 51:11 could say:
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not
thy holy spirit from me. This verse shows that the Holy Spirit in
the Old Testament could come and leave people. There is more then just
this example of this. This verse though does not say that David lost the
spirit but that he prays he wont lose the spirit then the next verses
says, return unto me the joy of thy salvation David does not ask Him to
give it back to him but to just restore the joy he once had in his
Saviour. But this is different in the New Testament for in Acts 2:17 the
Spirit is poured out upon someone. In 1 Cor. 3:16 we are told that the
Holy Spirit DWELLS
within us. Then in Ephesians chapter 1 we are
SEALED with the Holy Spirit. 1 John 5:13 it
tells us that we can know we are saved. These
things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of
God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe
on the name of the Son of God. Even John 3:16 tells us eternal
security. It says if we believe we have everlasting life. I know that I
am saved I also know that I always will be saved for God has promised
me: I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish
1 John 2:18,19,22, 1John 3: 2,
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye
have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many
antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been
of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out,
that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is
antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what
we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like
him; for we shall see him as he is.
Would I be wrong in saying the first step would be to explain what
antichrist means? Well to be real simple lets just separate the words
anti-christ. Anyone truly saved is saved. They do not say that
antichrists were never saved cause it is taken for granted that you knew
it, the word antichrist is self explanitory:

1) the adversary of the Messiah
Someone that denys Christ as Saviour was never saved because to be saved
you must acknowledge the Lord as God and Saviour (1 Cor. 12:3). No one
can become antichrist. But someone that turns from Christ after
professing to be saved is called an apostate and if you read my paper
before this one you will see this fully explained for an apostate was
never saved because we are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13) So if
we are sealed with the Holy Spirit we can not lose our salvation. You
will notice in reading this book that John is writing to Christians and
he believed they were Christians because he says and warns them of
antichrists that will come he is not telling them that they could become
one. They will try as in verse 19 to say they are Christians but they
can not last. If someone enters your denomination somehow that does not
believe that Jesus is the Messiah they will not last they can not. Also
there are new religions and cults I will not mention names who are like
verse 19 who try to say they are right but they will fall away because
they do not accept Christ as the only way of salvation.
We can then see that John is telling the Christians they ARE sons of
God. If you read the verse he is not doubting that they will lose this
but is looking forward to when they will be changed and be with their
Saviour.
1 John2: 24, 25
24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have
heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning
shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the
Father.
25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
John is telling the Christians with all the false teaching going around
and with antichrists arising for them to not be moved but to hold firm
to what they have been taught. If they do they will continue with the
Father or will not stumble and grow weak but continue strong in
communion with the Father. This does not mean lose of salvation and John
even says in the next verse they are promised eternal life. He is not
afraid of losing it for he is saying we were promised it.
Romans 2: 1-13
1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever
thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest
thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against
them which commit such things.
3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things,
and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and
longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to
repentance?
5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart
treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation
of the righteous judgment of God;
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and
honour and immortality, eternal life:
8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but
obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of
the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the
Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law:
and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of
the law shall be justified.
It will help to start from the beginning of the chapter to understand
what Paul is saying here. He first of all is edifying or correcting the
people that are judging others. He is telling them that they should not
because they are going to be judged themselves. Then in verse 6 he says
judged according to their deeds. Which means the deeds that are shown by
someone they are just outwardly showing what their hearts are like. So
thats how we get the next two verses. For you to better understand what
they mean let me put it in this way:
Someone saved: Someone who earnestly seeks for glory or honour
immorality. If someone seeks this they will find it (salvation) so this
verse is for someone that is saved can look back to the time when they
sought.
Someone lost: someone that does not obey the truth (Gods Word) etc.. is
not saved.
These two verses here explain verse seven and eight. For Paul explains
it then at the end of each verse explains what this type of person has.
These verses are not speaking about the saved. It is telling us how God
will judge people.
1 Timothy 4:1,2
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the
latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing
spirits, and doctrines of devils:
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot
iron;
We should take note that a true Christian is sealed with the promise of
the Holy Spirit. So a true Christian cannot depart from the faith. This
here is speaking about apostasy. Someone that professed to be a
Christian but then turned away from Christ. The problem you people have
is that you think everyone that professes is saved but we are told in
Matthew chapter 7 that everyone that professes is not saved. Some people
profess salvation but do not possess salvation.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not
inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor
idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves
with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified,
but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of
our God.
We can see here how something similar is mentioned also in the previous
chapter and verse 11. But the difference is that in this chapter is
talking about someone who is continually doing this. The previous
chapter is talking about fellowship among believers. If someone commits
one of the sins mentioned in chapter five the can be taken out of
fellowship with believers on Sunday morning. But chapter five is
speaking of just a time not a continuous thing. The Lord even speaks of
this in Mark 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The
spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
This chapter is speaking about sinners that sin continuously. Paul is
not speaking about the ones hes writing to or saying it can happen to
them. In verse nine he says the unrighteous. He makes it clear hes not
speaking of the ones hes writing to in verse 11. For he calls them the
washed [taken away {sin}], sanctified (to purify internally by renewing
of the soul), and justified (to render righteous or such he ought to
be).
So from this it appears a true Christian is unmovable.
Hebrews 5:12-14, 6:1-6
To get a full explanation as what I believe you are looking for requires
all these verses. It will be split up and I will be taking some of the
notes from my first paper on Eternal Security as I have already touched
on theses chapters with someone else
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers,
ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of
the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of
strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of
righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those
who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good
and evil.
All these verses are talking about are young believers and older ones.
The new believers should start out slowly learning as they go. So they
learn as a babe takes milk from a mother then as they mature they can
tackle bigger tougher issues (the meat) This here speaks nothing about
losing salvation
1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine
of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation
of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of
resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
3 And this will we do, if God permit.
So let us have our minds and affections set on Christ our Saviour
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have
tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to
come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing
they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open
shame.
We should first of all realize that verse 4,5 is not directed at the
readers because he says "those"second of all the first step to salvation
is repentance but is not salvation. We can see that all all the things
listed here can be experienced by an unsaved person.
enlightened --> heard the gospel
tasted heavenly gift --> realized what God was providing (they
tasted but didn't take)
Were made parakers of the Holy Ghost --> They were
priviledged ( 1 Cor. 7:14, For the
unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife
is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now
are they holy.)
--> Could have been once convicted (John
16:8, And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of
righteousness, and of judgment:)
But in all this there is not one mention of, trust, repentance,
remission of sin -- no salvation.
If someone professed after all of this (It was only profession for there
is no record here of salvation) and fall away and publicly put down the
name of Christ to rample His name it is apostasy. There is no record of
anyone who was aware of the truth then trampled it under their feet that
ever realized their fault and was saved.
7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that
cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is
dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
oft upon -> often
meet -> useful
dressed-> cultivated
In verse seven nature is compared to the true believer. The earth
drinketh the rain and bringeth herbs. A Christian loves God's Word and
it shows.
8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is
rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
This verse speaks of apostates who were able to accept the truth but
truthfully never did they can not bring glory to God and will be cursed.
We should take note --they never were saved.
9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of
you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work
and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye
have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
These two verses are spoken to believers for he calls them beloved and
refers to them as having salvation.
11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the
same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and
patience inherit the promises.
13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no
greater, he sware by himself,
14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will
multiply thee.
15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he
obtained the promise.
These verses are very nice. For the writer is telling the ones weak in
faith to continue like ones before them. We can see here also god has
promised salvation to true believers even if they fall and stumble as he
promised Abraham He would bless his descendants. Abraham believed God's
word so he "fought the good fight," because he believed what God told
him. Same as theses Christians who are weak and may stumble that they
have been promised eternal life which they have (v.9)
I would like to thank the people who gave me these scriptures and
thoughts. For they help me go stronger in what the bible actually says
in once saved always saved. There is no contradiction in this term. The
contradiction lies in the thought that someone can lose their salvation.
If that was so it would be like when you cross a river jumping from rock
to rock. You have to take each step carefully afraid that one might slip
and you fall in. I'm glad salvation is not like this. For it is more as
a nice bridge stretched across a river. Something you rely on and not
afraid that it will fall. Look at king David. He knew where He was going
when He died. Peter knew where he was going, the thief on the cross,
Paul, John, James, etc We never hear of them losing their salvation. As
for Judas Iscariot we can read that He never was saved. He was the son
of perdition the same name given to the devil. Just cause he walked with
the Lord doesn't mean he was on of the Lords It is like an uncle of mine
described to me. He is newly saved. He told me if I told you my car
burned you would believe me if you saw it you would know it. This is
like salvation someone like Judas believed it but they couldn't look
back to a day in their lifes when they Knew it. Of course false
professors may have something. But they don't know that Christ died for
them they just believe it. It is like 1 John 5:13 that ye may know. I
believed Christ died for me. But on January 18th , 1991 around seven
o'clock in the morning that was when I trusted that Christ had died for
me.

END NOTE:
There are many people out there that would like to call eternal
security the devil's false gospel. An idea made up by Satan to lead us
astray. They believe it gives us the right to have immoral lives and
never have to worry about it.
With this in mind I would like to post two more pieces of scripture:
1John 3:9 Whosoever
is born of God doth not commit sin; for his
seed
remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
A person that is truly born
again, does not dwell in sin and wish to practice sin as the above verse
is saying when properly studied. A Christian that is truly born again
has the seed of God inside of him or her, which means that we are not
free to go around doing as we please because the Holy Spirit is within
us to speak to us.
Also notice "born" of God,
the word born is to be made part of something, part of a family. The
word born in this case is in the Indicative mood, which means it is
fact. He IS of God.
1 John 1:6
If we say that we have fellowship with him and
walk in the darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 but
if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship
one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from
all sin.
8 ¶ If
we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is
not in us.
9 If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If
we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is
not in us.
Also when it comes to these verses we learn
an important lesson. The first verse I mentioned tells us that true
believers do not practice sin and desire to do so, but look at this
verse now. verse 6. The Weymouth translation of the NT, has it very
close to what Paul is saying: "If, while we are living in darkness,
we profess to have fellowship with Him, we speak falsely and are not
adhering to the truth."
For one to say that they are close to God
yet dwelling in the darkness or doing things that may not please God
then they are lieing, they are not enjoying His fellowship. But if
we walk in the light v.7) or obey His will we will have fellowship
with our fellow brothers as well and reminds us that Christ's blood
is sufficent for all.
In verse 8 it seems that people were saying
they couldn't sin after they got saved. If you look at the
translation, they were not denying past sins before conversion, but
the ability to commit sins after salvation.
But the writer tells the Christians they
are wrong, we still do have sin in us, because we still have the
flesh within us (Mark 14:38), but the writer gives us the comfort to
know that if we do sin God is willing to forgive us.
Just because we make a mistake does not
mean we willingly wish to dwell in sin, the spirit of God has been
put inside of us that we do not wish to displease our Saviour. But
because we still have the flesh (human nature) within us, there are
times we do mess up, and we can thank God that His blood was enough
to even forgive the mistakes we make after conversion
